North Carolina Security Guard Policy & Procedure

In the state of North Carolina, a person wishing to work as a security guard must obtain their license/registration through the state. In order to do so, a person needs to submit an application to the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board or NCDPS. Prior to applying, some requirements and criteria need to be met. A person cannot apply who is less than 18 or has ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor, drug related activity, or fraud or theft in the last 5 years. People who are wanting to become security guards in North Carolina need to be of good moral character so that they may be trusted to protect the public.

Along with the application a person needs to submit 2 passport sized photos for their identification card, 2 sets of fingerprint cards a certified copy of a criminal background check, and proof of their successfully completed a security guard training program that is state approved and was completed within 30 days of being hired. A person in North Carolina must be actively employed by a security company in order to apply for their license.

Training Requirements for NC Security Guards

The security guard training requirements in North Carolina are that an individual complete a state approved program within a month of being hired by a security company. This training program consists of 16 hours of in classroom training on the following topics: the security officer in North Carolina, laws for security officers in North Carolina, emergency response, communication, patrol procedures, report writing/note taking/documentation, and deportation. A state approved program will have all of these components as part of the training. Each portion is a certain number of the 16 hours that make up the complete security guard program.

For those people who are wishing to become an armed security guard in North Carolina, they will need to complete the above requirements that are expected of unarmed guards, and in addition will need to acquire a firearms permit, they also must be at least 21 and have a North Carolina driver’s license. Armed guards have additional training to be completed in order to carry the proper weapons permits, but also must complete an additional 4 hours of security guard training as well. Once these are complete a person can submit their application for their armed guard registration cards.
